Now for the medical notes (for those of you interested). This past Monday I had a physical at my family doctor’s getting ready for my upcoming surgery on October 6. Tuesday morning I got a call from said doctor telling me I had a big problem. He said my blood count was about half what is should be. A low blood count can lead to multiple problems including fatigue, dizziness (even passing out), heart attacks, and strokes. He said the hospital would not operate on me with such a low blood count. The low blood count was from losing so much blood over the past few months due to the tumors in the bladder and colon.
The doctor then added that I needed to get to the hospital as soon as I could get there and check myself in for blood transfusions. So I did such, checking into the hospital about 1:00 Tuesday afternoon. They gave me two pints of blood late Tuesday and two more Wednesday afternoon. They released me from the hospital late yesterday (Thursday). My blood count was 6.4 when I checked into the hospital and 10.8 when I left.
This is my first experience with blood transfusions. I am hoping I can sustain an acceptable level until I get the tumors taken out on October 6.
I’ll try to get one more newsletter out a few days before the operation. But there is no guarantee of that. These tumors are hurting more than any I had in the past, and draining my energy more. And I don’t know right now if any more hospital visits are going to be necessary to keep my blood count at an acceptable level before the operation on October 6.
Until I am Back in the Saddle again, may all your Trails be Happy and all your Water be Cool.
